W. Eugene Smith Award

W. Eugene Smith Award

I was extremely honored to be on the jury together with Clinton Cargill, news director for the New York Times Photo Department and photographer Sabiha Çimen, winner of the 2024 Grant, and review 160 applicants. The grant for Humanistic Photography empowers storytellers since 1979, supporting high standards and integrity in documentary photography.

To be on a jury of such a prestigious award is an honor and a responsibility. It is important,
within the respectful conversations with fellow jurors, to take into consideration the main
motivation of the award, which supports independent photographers by
funding grants that help keep our world informed and engaged. It is
not an easy process: the quality of the entries is extremely high, the
topics touched are all interesting. so how do we reach a decision
Relevance, inclusivity, diversity in representation, de-colonization of
the gaze, depth of research and a strong motivation to continue and
pursue the project and further its diffusion via diverse platforms are
certainly important.
